For most Asians, 08.08.08 is a very auspicious day as in the chinese language, 8 is pronounced as 'Fah' which coincidently sounds the same as the 发 in 发财 (prosper)!

The opening ceremony for the XXIX (29th) Olympiad was held in Beijing on this auspicious day.

We flew to Melbourne for the Opening Ceremony's celebrations hosted by 3CW Chinese Radio where mummy, on behalf of CMC Markets, was a major sponsor.

Chikky was supposed to come with us but was unwell and couldnt make it :(

Mummy booked us into Quest Serviced Apartments in Southbank for the weekend. It was conveniently located close to the city and to where the event was to take place. Rates for a 2 bedroom, 2 bathroom apartment was only approx. AUD$240! How great is that!

We cabbed down to the event hall that evening. The event hall was actually a converted boat shed! Not the small ones u'd imagine but those that actually housed and repaired numerous boats! It was HUGE! Close to the size of a warehouse!

The evening started with a VIP cocktail session where Henessy was the featured sponsor! YES! We had Henessy VSOP (I think), Moet & Chandon Champagne AND Sharks' Fin Dumplings with XO Sauce! YUP! It was yummy!

Dinner was 3 courses. It was acceptable but nothing to rave about except for the dessert. Personally, I found the Masters of Ceremony (there were like a total of 5! -_-") too long-winded. they tried to conduct the event with English AND Mandarin and dragged it out in the attempt to entertain us. -_-

The highlight of the evening was still the reason for our esteemed presence!

The Opening Ceremony of the XXIX Olympiad in Beijing!

The theme this year was that of the ancient art of painting, where paintings were actually scrolls. It absolutely touched me when they not only had choreographed dancers to paint the 'outlines' but when they had every athlete walk through HUGE rainbow-coloured stamp pads and leave a mark on the painting.

Then there was the 'Lighting of the Olympic Torch' where they flew the guy up and he ran around the whole inner circumference of the stadium before he lighted up the gigantic torch, whose flames rose high above.

The fireworks for the entire event wwas absolutely spectacular and breath-taking! Hunny even commented that no other countried would be able to match that!

==========================================

I re-considered posting this cos of the controversy and scandal that was uncovered.

1. The little girl who had the solo was lip-syncing. Hey, dun get me wrong! Nothing wrong with lip-syncing if its you actually singing, right? However, they substituted the original singer because she was fat and ugly!

That's not reason enuf in my book!

2. The 'spectacular' fireworks did not happen on 08.08.08 itself but was added to the telecast from a prior taping! HELLO?!!! The world's dignitaries were all present! OMG la! Sia suay in front of the world's leaders is ok but cannot lie to the rest of the world watching ar??

Why werent the fireworks displayed?!!!

TSK TSK TSK!

Veteran actress Lee Heung Kam aka Kam-Jie held a farewell /retirement dinner on Sat, Jul 19 @ Star City.

Mummy asked if I would like to accompany her to another charity event. Apparently the seats belonged to another couple but they were unable to attend. The whole table was paid for by Mr Ron Lim (a very charitable Melbournite restauranteur) and it would look really bad if mummy were to attend alone. So being the *ahem* filial *cough* daughter I am :) I agreed to go!

Yes, I knowingly agreed even though everything would be in Cantonese (I know nuts about the dialect) cos there would be a sit-down dinner and mummy needed the company! Mummy's a hobnobber, u know.

** This entry is pretty photo-intensive.

Kam-Jie

The 2 hosts for the night with King-Tan Yuen (middle)

Kam-Jie's god-daughter.
I was told that she's a well-known singer.

满长红

Friends & fellow colleagues belting out tunes as part of the evening's entertain.

唐伯虎 - If u look carefully, u'll notice King-Tan Yuen (white T-shirt) who also played the role of Shi-Liu in Stephen Chow's 唐伯虎点秋香.

This old lady (that Kam-Jie's speaking to) donated AUD$10,000 on the spot.
Yes, that's right. AUD$10K!

The total amount collected that night was AUD$108,000.

All monies raised were donated to an old folks' home where Kam-Jie was actively supporting.

I do remember watching TVB's dramas when I was younger and in Singapore and Kam-jie used to play the matriach in most of them. I do wish I'd grasp the dialect sooner... mebbe this is as good a time as any to start? :)

Realised that need to lose weight too if I wanna keep attending functions (>.>) need to look really good to *ahem* impress...

Every year, on behalf of CMC Markets, mummy sponsors a table to support the Guide Dogs Australia. This year was no different.

Being the doggie lover that I am, I wouldn't pass up the opportunity to cuddle and pet doggies! :)

The event was held at the Stamford Grand North Ryde.

The evening started off with drinks and canapes, and the viewing of the 'silent auction' displays. Artworks and autographed memoribilias were on display for auction.

Dinner was followed by live entertainment, live Auction and then the raffle!! Dinner was scrumptious, alcohol was free-flow (I had champagne! :) wahahahaah!)

Doggies given in our doggy bags!

We spent the night at the Stamford Grand North Ryde, courtesy of mummy! Look at the size of the bed!!

It was a great night's sleep :)

Overall, it was a great night out!

Feb 16th - Went for Chinese New Year dinner at Palace Garden Restaurant @ Picadilly. This dinner was organised by the Temasek Club.

Mummy booked the whole table of 10 but there were only 7 of us! MORE FOOD!!! *drools* $500 for the whole table i think... well worth the $$$!

Mum, Peter and Andrew joined us for the dinner.

12 courses X_X

Yu Shang - Traditional CNY dish of shredded veggies and originally mackeral but in Aus, they substitue it with salmon

Drunken Lion - Not sure wad it depicts but it was damn good lor!!!
The Lion came to collect ang baos from all the tables too.

& Wasabi Beef.

Yang Zhou Chow Fan - The fried rice was too bland for my liking even though there were a good amount of shrimps and ingredients.

Steamed Fish with Ginger and Shallots - The fish was scrumptous and fresh.

Roasted Meats - The roasted meats were well-seasoned. The char siew was heavenly while the skin on the roast pork was ULTRA crispy!! The duck and chicken were so-so nia.

XO Prawns - You could actually taste the 'XO'.... yummmm ~

The veggies were toooo big but overall ok ba...

Ee-fu Noodles - nice but a bit dry. Hunny's favourite afterall =]

Overall, the food was nicer than most restaurants and we did have a good time.

Feb 17th - We stayed over at Peter's the night before as it would be easier for us the next day.

Before the chicken salad, we actually had lots of canapes! lols!

Chocolate & strawberry delight!

Ate quite a bit but didnt drink much =] Hunny drank quite alot though -_-

Lastly, Happy Birthday Mum & Peter!
